ECCMID is the leading and the largest educational platform for clinical microbiologists, infectious disease, infection prevention, infec- tion control and public health specialists. The year of 2020 saw infectious disease coming to the forefront of not only clinical and academic circles, but the world's conscious- ness as a whole, and we are witnessing the tremendous impact infections such as COVID-19 have not only on human health and health systems, but on economies and societies. This year ESCMID and ECCMID will adapt to this challenge by hosting an online event. Online delivery allows accessibility of ECCMID content by delegates from across the globe, regardless of their ability to travel for an on-site event. We are excited that, in a time where sharing of scientific information from all parts of the world is more important than ever, geography is not a barrier for participation. The planning of a fully online event of this size is a large operation, and ESCMID is working hard to ensure the seamless integration of the scientific material into an online environment. Virtual platforms provide access to more content than can usually be consumed by a potential delegate and with greater flexibility, including pre- and post-event on-demand content consumption. Furthermore, ECCMID 2021 will, for the first time, take place from Friday to Monday instead of the usual Saturday to Tuesday. An even more comprehensive and timely programme than in previous years is planned, encompassing the entire range of ECCMID topics together with COVID-related content, with high level speakers. New formats and initiatives are a necessity to continue as the leading European congress on clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. Last year the 30 under 30 list was created to highlight 30 young scientists aged 30 or younger, and was an amazing success allowing ESCMID to highlight the fantastic contributions of the young members. This year, in addition to moving to online delivery, we are looking forward to the incorporation of new and innovative session types, such as virtual practical sessions and small-group Fireplace Discus- sions with ECCMID keynote speakers. A new infectious disease-themed Escape Room will also be offered as an immersive interactive addition. For the first time, the ECCMID Programme has also started before the normal 4-day window, with a series of 5 online ‘Pre-EC- CMID Days’ taking place in the months leading up to the congress, addressing key themes which will be further covered and built upon during the congress itself. ECCMID 2021 enables our community to discuss, network, develop and share knowledge that is imperative for the entire global population. The scientific programme highlights the latest scientific achievements and provides a comprehensive intellectual and operational environment for the acquisition of knowledge, skills and clinical judgement. We have also integrated a wide range of new innovative solutions to enable our industry partners to showcase their latest products, findings, technologies and innovations. We look forward to seeing you online!
