General Information Experience Copenhagen Velkommen til København! Copenhagen is a compact city full of historic buildings, cobble- stoned streets, and a fascinating mix of cultural delights. Boasting beautiful architecture and award-winning designs, it has not only been cited as one of the best cities to live in, but also one of the best to visit. Traversing Copenhagen There are many possibilities to traverse the city. If the weather is agreeable, the best way is to either walk or to rent a bicycle (available from most hotels) and take advantage of the city’s many bicycle tracks. Most surrounding districts are all within walking or biking distance, and many of the downtown streets are pedestrian only, making a walk through the bustling city a delight. Of course, there is also the possibility to use public transporta- tion. Copenhagen's public transport is prompt and reliable, with Metro, local trains and buses (including waterbuses)all accessi- ble with the same ticket. All you need to know is how many zones you will pass through on your journey. The Architecture of Copenhagen Whilst known widely for its colourful buildings, there are many more stunning landmarks scattered around Copenhagen. Through their brutalist and modern styles, these new buildings stand out from the rest while not interfering with the city’s low skyline. History Museum: Go time travelling at Denmark’s history museum. The National Museum showcases everything from Viking treasure and the Egtved Girl’s grave to Egyptian mummies to Renais- sance art and pieces from the present day (Metro station: Kon- gens Nytorv). Rosenborg Castle: King Christian IV built this castle between 1606 and 1634 as a royal pleasure retreat. Today the palace is a museum known for its exhibition of Denmark’s crown jewels. Ev- ery day at noon, guards march from the barracks outside Rosen- borg through the city to the royal residence, Amalienborg, for the changing of the guard. The surrounding park, King’s Garden, is very popular with locals (Metro station: Nørreport). Harbour: Nyhavn, “New Harbour”, is a picturesque port area from the 17th century with old painted houses and cobblestones. This is the perfect place to stop for a drink and look at the wooden boats, also the house where Danish author Hans Christian An- dersen once lived (no.20). From Nyhavn, you can also get on board one of the many harbour and canal tours. (Metro station: Kongens Nytorv).FINAL PROGRAMME – 33RD ECCMID Copenhagen, Denmark 202351 Nature Dog walkers, joggers and parents with strollers all relish their daily walk in Frederiksberg Garden. Green City The capital of Denmark has put sustainability at the forefront of its agenda, as have many of its inhabitants. Initiatives are ongo- ing to have the city become carbon-neutral by 2025. More and more, the city aims to become increasingly ecofriend- ly. Not only are the buses in Copenhagen starting to operate us- ing electricity instead of diesel, but even the rental boats use solar energy. Copenhagen has one of the world’s most ambitious climate pol- icieswithagoalofbeingthefirstcarbon-neutralcapitalcityby 2025. Not only are restaurants an experience but also the many stalls that can be found on the streets of the harbour city, which operate under the same philos- ophy.
