He is a full professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of Antwerp in Belgium since 1992, director of the lab- oratory of Clinical Microbiology at the Uni- versity Hospital Antwerp since 1992 and director of Laboratory Medicine of the Uni- versity Hospital Antwerp since 1997. He founded the research Laboratory of Medical Microbiology at the University of Antwerp in 1994. He was part-time professor at the University of Leiden from 2000-2008 and currently holds a part- time position at the University Medical Centre Utrecht since 2017. His professional goal is to bridge the gap between basic and clin- ical research, with a major focus on antibiotic resistance, to en- hance the standard of healthcare, public health and professional standards, for the good of the public in large. His vision is to build a sustainable infrastructure for clinical research on infectious dis- eases in Europe. He is a popular resource person and opinion lead- er, much sought after by local and international media for views on matters related to public health and infectious diseases. Prof. Goossens coordinated several large EU-funded projects and is the founder of the annual European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD). Research interests Prof. Goossens’s current research is focused in five areas. First, the detection and genetic mechanisms involved in the emergence and evolution of antibiotic resistance and virulence in bacteria and its epidemiological and ecological bases and implications. Second, studying antimicrobial use in hospitals, the community and long-term care facilities, developing indicators of use and quality of prescribing, initially in Europe, later globally, focusing on low- and middle-income countries. Third, linking scientific and clinical research throughout Europe in lower respiratory tract in- fections, in primary health care and hospital medical practice. Fourth, better preparing Europe for emerging infectious diseases and pandemics. Fifth, building a network of more than 800 diag- nostic labs in more than 40 countries in Europe to support clinical trials that investigate the utility of new antimicrobial strategies and diagnostics. ESCMID Award for Excellence in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases 2020 One of the main missions of ESCMID is to promote scientific research in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. To this aim, ESCMID supports young clinicians, researchers and established scholars with awards and grants to recognise achievements and provide incentive for future accomplishments. ESCMID funds its members’ research projects and training in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases fields, with more than EUR 500,000 every year, of which about EUR 400,000 are reserved to finance several promising research projects. ESCMID is pleased to announce the recipients of the society’s awards and grants for the year 2021. Herman Goossens, Antwerpen, Belgium Scientific output and awards Prof. Goossens authored more than 600 Web of Science cited pa- pers, and his papers have been cited close to 25,000 times. He was the promotor of close to thirty PhDs, authored more than 20 chap- ters and was invited as a speaker at more than 400 international events. He has received several honors and awards, including the Solvay award in 1983, the Horlait-Dapsens award in 1987, the Vesa- lius award in 1987, the Goslings prize of the Dutch-Flemish Society of Infectious Diseases in 1991, the “Eugène Yourassowsky” price of the Belgian Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseas- es in 2001, 2002 and 2006, the Leadership Award by the American Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA) in 2006, and the medical sciences award of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine in 2017. In 2008 Prof. Goossens obtained the prestigious status of Methusalem top-scientist from the Flemish government. Policy and societal impact Prof. Goossens founded the Belgian Antibiotic Policy Coordination Committee (BAPCOC) by Royal Decree in 1999 and chaired BAPCOC until 2018. With BAPCOC, he organised annual public awareness cam- paigns in Belgium on antibiotic resistance since 1999, targeting the population level using mass-distribution media. He was a member of the ICAAC Program Committee (2001 – 2005) and of the ECCMID Programme Committee (2005 – 2008). He has chaired or served on numerous expert committees for the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Commission, among other European and in- ternational organisations and expert committees. He was a member of an expert group of the European Commission’s Scientific Working Group on Antimicrobial Resistance in 1998-1999. This expert group published a report in May 1999, which recommended the ban of an- imal growth promotors. The European Commission followed this rec- ommendation and all animal growth promotors were phased out by 2006 in the EU. During the Belgian EU Presidency (2001) he prepared the European Recommendations on the prudent use of antimicrobial agents in human medicine. These Recommendations were adopted by the European Ministers of Public Health on November 15, in Brussels. Prof. Goossens was elected chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance by his peers. Diagnostics]Awards, Grants & Fellowships 13FINAL PROGRAMME – 31st ECCMID Online 2021 Aislinn Cook St. George’s University of London in the Paediatric Infec- tious Diseases Research Group London, United Kindom In 2020, the winner was Aislinn Cook, a research fellow at St. George’s University of London in the Paediatric Infec- tious Diseases Research Group (London, UK). There she works on clinical presentation, treatment and outcomes of neonatal sepsis, as well as paediatric bloodstream in- fections. She was awarded the prize for her abstract on the NeoAMR Global Neonatal Sepsis Observational Study (NeoOBS). NeoOBS was launched in July 2018 by the Global Antibi- otic R&D Partnership in collaboration with St. George’s University of London, Penta Foundation, University of Antwerp, MRC Clinical Trials Unit at University College London and 19 hospitals in 11 predominantly LMIC countries. The primary objective of NeoOBS is to assess mortality rates of hospitalised infants being treated with significant sepsis; secondary objectives include describing clinical presentation and recovery, sepsis management and microbiological epidemiology. This in- volved the collection of routine clinical, laboratory and antimicrobial therapy data from approximately 3000 neonates <60 days old with clinically diagnosed sepsis; patients were followed for 28 days. This global multi-cen- tre prospective study will complete recruitment in Feb- ruary 2020 with each site recruiting up to 200 neonates. Data from the study will be used to inform the design of future antibiotic treatment trials for neonatal sepsis. ISF-ESCMID Sepsis Award Isis Ricaño Ponce, PhD Department of Internal Medicine and Radboud Center for Infectious Diseases Radboud University Medical Center Nijmegen, the Netherlands I am doing a postdoc in Prof. Mihai G. Netea’s group and this project is part of the prospective study FUnctional Genomics in SEvere Infections (FUSE), a fantastic col- laboration with Anca Riza and Prof. Mihai Ioana from the Human Genomics Laboratory at the Craiova Univer- sity of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania. Our team work focuses on integrating different kinds of omic-technologies with clinical data to unravel mecha- nisms causing sepsis. We integrate genetics, proteom- ics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics to identify the molecular basis for sepsis heterogeneity. First, to facil- itate the diagnosis of sepsis, which might lead to faster treatment and better outcomes. Then, to select better tailored therapies for sepsis patients responding dif- ferently to the disease. The International Sepsis Forum (ISF) is a non-profit public American charity with the mission to improve outcomes for patients with sepsis. Its award gives the recipient USD 500 and the opportunity to present their work during a session jointly organised by ISF and ESCMID. 2021202014FINAL PROGRAMME – 31st ECCMID Online 2021 ESCMID Young Investigator Awards for Research in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases 2020 Dr. Pardi obtained his Ph.D. in Biochem- istry and Genetics from the University of Szeged, Hungary. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 2011 he joined Dr. Drew Weissman’s laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania. He explored the devel- opment of a novel, versatile vaccine de- livery platform using nucleoside-mod- ified mRNA encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles. He played an instrumental role in the development of potent new generation mRNA-based vaccines against various important pathogens including HSV-2, Zika and influenza viruses. He has been heavily involved in SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine devel- opment as well. Additionally, Dr. Pardi’s studies significantly con- tributed to understanding the mechanism of action of this novel vaccine type. Currently, Dr. Pardi is an Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania and has been working on the development of universal influenza vaccines using his mRNA-based vaccine platform. Dr. Pardi has built up an exten- sive collaborative network including more than 20 laboratories in the United States, South America, Europe and Asia. Dr. Pardi will receive his award at ECCMID 2021 during the Special Session “ESCMID Young Investigator Awards” (9 July 2021, 13:15 CEST) and he will give a presentation entitled: “Developing a new vaccine class using nucleoside-modified mRNA”. Norbert Pardi, Philadelphia, United States Dr. Miotto is a Research associate at the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Mi- lan (Italy) working on tuberculosis. He holds an MSc in Molecular biology of the Cell from the University of Milano and a Ph.D. in Medical Biotechnology from the University of Siena. Dr. Miotto’s interest in biological sciences motivated his de- cision to take the first steps in the field of research and join the scientific community. After working on drug resistance mechanisms and diagnosis in Mycobacterium tu- berculosis, the challenge to better understand the biological rea- sons behind the success of this pathogen lead him to approach host-pathogen interaction studies. Despite the different themes considered in the field, the shared motif underlining his research interests is the attempt to translate basic research findings into clinically useful information. Dr. Miotto will receive his award at ECCMID 2021 during the Spe- cial Session “ESCMID Young Investigator Awards” (9 July 2021, 13:15 CEST) and he will give a presentation entitled: “Moving toward precision medicine for tuberculosis”. Paolo Miotto, Milan, Italy Dr. Buetti studied medicine at the Uni- versity of Zurich, Switzerland. In 2013, he started his career in infectious dis- eases as a resident at the Bern Univer- sity Hospital, Switzerland. He subse- quently worked as a consultant at the Bern University Hospital and was dep- uty-head of research and development of Swissnoso (National Center for Infec- tion Control, Switzerland). In 2019, he obtained a Master degree in clinical epidemiology and healthcare research from the Sorbonne University of Paris, France. He is currently working at the IAME lab- oratory (Infection Antimicrobials Modelling Evolution, Team “Deci- sion Science in Infectious Disease prevention, control and care”) in Paris and at Infection Control Program and WHO Collaborating Niccolò Buetti, Bern, Switzerland Centre on Patient Safety, University of Geneva Hospitals and Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Buetti’s research interests lie primarily in the epidemiology of community-acquired and hospital-acquired bloodstream infections as well as in the development of preven- tive measures and management strategies for intravascular cath- eter-related infections and multi-drug resistant microorganisms (e.g. vancomycin-resistant enterococci). Dr. Buetti will receive his award at ECCMID 2021 during the Spe- cial Session “ESCMID Young Investigator Awards” (9 July 2021, 13:15 CEST) and he will give a presentation entitled: “From national epidemiology to the bedside of the patient: ex- panding our knowledge of intravascular catheter-related blood- stream infections”.Awards, Grants & Fellowships 15FINAL PROGRAMME – 31st ECCMID Online 2021 ESCMID Young Investigator Awards for Research in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases 2021 Prof. Jason Trubiano is an Infectious Diseases Physician and NHMRC Re- search Fellow in Melbourne, Australia. He is the Director of Antimicrobial Stew- ardship (Austin Health) and Head of the Centre for Antibiotic Allergy and Re- search. Prof. Trubiano is a University of Melbourne Clinical Associate Professor and Emerging Leader of the Internation- al Society for Infectious Diseases. In 2017, he was awarded an NHMRC-supported PhD in antibiotic allergy testing in Antimicrobi- al Stewardship, and in 2020 completed a post-doctoral fellowship with the National Centre for Infections in Cancer exploring antibi- otic allergy in immunocompromised hosts. His primary research remains in translational antibiotic allergy diagnostics, point-of- care tools and health services penicillin allergy testing programs. He has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and his work in the development of antibiotic allergy assessment tools, clinical prediction rules and whole-of-hospital penicillin allergy testing programs have been published in leading journals and cit- ed in international guidelines and health policy. Prof. Trubiano will receive his award at ECCMID 2021 during the Special Session “ESCMID Young Investigator Awards” (9 July 2021, 13:15 CEST) and he will give a presentation entitled: “The emerging role of antibiotic allergy programs in antimicrobial stewardship”. Jason Trubiano, Victoria, Australia Dr. Marit van Gils studied medical phar- maceutical sciences at the University of Groningen (Netherlands). She has performed her Ph.D. (2007-2011) at the University of Amsterdam in the lab of Dr. Schuitemaker on the humoral immune response after HIV-1 infection. She con- tinued her career as a postdoctoral fel- low in the lab of Dr. Sanders working on the development of an HIV protein vaccine at the Academic Med- ical Center in Amsterdam. Dr. Van Gils has also performed part of her postdoctoral research at the Scripps Research Institute (La Jolla, United States) in the lab of Dr. Burton and in 2017 she started her own research group at the Amsterdam UMC studying the antibody and B cell responses after viral infection and vac- cination. Antibody responses are vital in the protection against infectious diseases and the major goal in vaccine research is to induce potent antibodies. Gaining knowledge and control over the events needed to elicit these potent antibodies will be cru- cial to develop protective vaccines. Therefore, the lab of Dr. van Gils studies monoclonal antibodies from natural infection and vaccination for their phenotype, affinity, and specificity to guide vaccine design. Correa-Martínez Infection Control Resident University Hospital Münster Münster, Germany Carlos, a fifth-year infection control resident, conduct- ed research on malaria as a medical student at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Caracas, Venezuela, engaging in student associations seeking to foster undergraduate medical research in Latin America. He began his specialisation in Germany after working as a rural physician in remote areas and indigenous com- munities in Venezuela. His current research projects focus on diagnostic microbiology, travel medicine, molecular epidemiology and hospital infections, coop- erating with different institutions. As a lecturer at the University of Münster, he aims at promoting interdisci- plinary work in infection control, providing medical stu- dents and fellow physicians with core notions of this field. Having trained in antimicrobial stewardship and currently pursuing an MSc in Public Health at the Lon- don School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Carlos’s goals are to contribute to tackling the spread of multi- drug-resistant microorganisms from a comprehensive perspective and to develop feasible prevention strate- gies for low-income countries. Carlos L. Correa-Martinez will receive his award during the TAE Session 1 on Saturday, 10 July 2021, 9:30 CEST (Special Session) Parul Kodan Senior Resident All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi, India Dr Parul Kodan received top honors during her medical training and was awarded the ‘Best All-Round-Student Award’. She did her MD, Medicine during which, along- side her clinical and academic work, she won many awards for quizzes, debates and for presentations of her work at national and international forums. She has received several honors including Award for Out- standing Performance (in Medicine) by Indian Medical Association (IMA), Rajiv-Gandhi-Science-Talent-Search, Fellowship and Inspire-Fellowship by Government of In- dia. In 2016, she joined the first batch of DM- infectious diseases training program of the country at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). She received a one-month ESCMID Funded Observership at CHUV Lau- sanne, Switzerland. She has served as the 2019 Stu- dent Ambassador for Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH). Parul Kodan will receive her award during the TAE Session 1 on Saturday, 10 July 2021, 9:30 CEST (Special Session)Awards, Grants & Fellowships 17FINAL PROGRAMME – 31st ECCMID Online 2021 ESCMID TAE Awards for Outstanding Training Achievments 2021 Nathan Peiffer-Smadja Infection Control Resident Université de Paris medical school and nursing school Paris, France Nathan Peiffer-Smadja coordinates the French network of young ID doctors (RéJIF) that accompanies French residents through their training and encourages them to study abroad. Nathan teaches infectious diseases at the Bi- chat-Claude Bernard Hospital (AP-HP) and at Univer- sité de Paris medical school and nursing school. He is co-supervising two master students in an international research project on a decision support system for an- timicrobial prescribing involving France, Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast, Mali, Gabon and Senegal. Patient and public involvement is one of Nathan’s pas- sions. He has organised community events for the gen- eral public about the use of new technologies for health purposes in the UK, with Imperial College London, and in France with Inserm. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nathan has been deeply involved in science information, education and communication on Twitter and public media. He has recently joined the Halo initiative supported by the United Nations to im- prove vaccine confidence through the use of Tiktok.
