The European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases www.escmid.org MID, cember ign: www. kterfolg.de3 About ESCMID Mission The European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infection- related diseases. This is achieved by promoting and supporting research, education, training and good medical practice. Background Since its founding in 1983, ESCMID has evolved to become the leading society in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases with members from all European countries and all continents. For more than 35 years, ESCMID has been an influential component in the professional lives of microbiologists and infectious disease specialists and now reaches regular and affiliated members around the world. ESCMID welcomes new colleagues from all nations. ESCMID is registered in Switzerland with headquarters in Basel. www.escmid.org/society www.escmid.org/executiveOrganization ESCMID Governance The society’s executive power is vested in an Executive Committee elected by the ESCMID members. The Assembly of Members takes place at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID). The society’s president is elected by the Executive Committee for a two-year term. Representatives of affiliated societies gather at the annual ESCMID Council meeting held during ECCMID. It serves as a forum for discussion and resolution of professional matters of common interest. Conferences Scientific conferences cover a range of current topics from basic science to clinical practice and target different audiences. Depending on the topic and objective, such conferences can be small expert meetings or address a larger audience of interested scientists. Online conferences are also offered to allow participants from across the globe to take part in ESCMID’s education programmes. Research Projects ESCMID encourages its study groups and individual members to initiate and participate in research projects and provides funding and administrative support for these projects. Additionally, ESCMID is a partner in EU-funded research programmes (see ‘European Affairs and Projects’, page 19). Medical Guidelines The development and dissemination of clinical and laboratory practice guide- lines according to the priciples of evi- dence-based medicine is a high priority for ESCMID, especially in areas where European diagnostic, therapeutic and infection control guidelines do not exist yet or need to be harmonized. ESCMID eLibrary All scientific and educational material generated at ECCMID as well as ESCMID conferences and courses can be found in this library that is freely accessible to ESCMID members. This material includes audios, videos, presentations, abstracts and posters. www.escmid.org/conferences www.escmid.org/guidelines www.escmid.org/elibrary9 ESCMID strongly supports individuals active in the fields of clinical micro- biology and infectious diseases with their postgraduate and continuing medical education (CME). You can benefit from diverse formats: Postgraduate Courses and Workshops Two- to four-day events focussing on specific clinical or laboratory issues of interest to trainees in clinical micro- biology or infectious diseases. They are organized by ESCMID study groups, professional societies or individual ESCMID members under the auspices and with the financial support of ESCMID. Summer School The annual one-week course is dedi- cated to postgraduate and continuing medical education. It covers a broad range of topics and is of interest to young MDs at the end of specialty training, as well as other colleagues working in the fields of clinical microbi- ology and infection. EUCIC Certification This first European-wide training programme in infection prevention and control (IPC) aims to establish an ex- change of knowledge and expertise be- tween different European institutions. This unique perspective on IPC helps to build a unique European framework and competence in which a new generation of IPC specialists are trained. www.escmid.org/education www.escmid.org/summerschoolNext >
