We look forward to seeing you in the near future, online or in person.” YEARBOOK 2020/2021 SOCIETY 3 A difficult year The year 2020 was an extreme- ly testing time impacting every aspect of life, and ESCMID was not immune to the difficulties caused by the first major pande- mic of the twenty-first century. Our plans were heavily affected, most notably with the cancella- tion of the 30th ECCMID in Paris, France. Whilst this was very dis- heartening, it was imperative for us to move forward and adapt our work accordingly, in a timely fashion. ESCMID responded early to the pandemic As SARS-CoV-2 continued to spread across the globe, ESCMID reached out to our colleagues worldwide and organised week- ly teleconferences among our ESCMID Affiliated Societies, buil- ding a platform for the prompt sharing of emerging knowledge related to the rapidly-evolving situation posed by the novel co- ronavirus. During this time, a series of live and open-access web-sym- posia were organised and con- ducted from early April until June 2020, addressing the research findings on the pandemic from clinical, diagnostic and public health perspectives. Meeting together online After the shock of the cancella- tion of the 30th ECCMID, it was obvious to ESCMID that there was a need to gather the scien- tific community and discuss the newest developments in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. Since onsite meetings were not an op- tion, the decision was made to organise the society’s first ever fully-online conference. After an extremely efficient and expedi- ted organisational process, the 3-day ESCMID Conference on Co- ronavirus Disease (ECCVID) was held in September 2020. With multiple parallel learning tracks, over 200 faculty members, and a full abstract programme, the conference was a resounding success and well-served the thousands of participants that attended either live or on-de- mand. This important event was followed by a series of 5 open- access COVID-related web-sym- posia in early 2021. A new way of life Now that we have the experien- ce of over a year of life with CO- VID-19 as an omniscient presen- ce, it is clear that a quick ‘return to normal’ is not possible as ho- ped during the early days of the pandemic. As we move forward into 2021, the ‘usual’ ESCMID educational events are regaining their place in the ESCMID calen- dar, albeit in an online context. We are very happy to be able to offer postgraduate education courses to our members, and the interest these new courses have generated is a pretty good indication that ESCMID members are eager to participate. The 31st ECCMID will take place fully online in July 2021, with a larger-than-ever scientific programme, as well as several new and innovative session ty- pes. We are looking forward to gathering thousands of experts from across the world, as after 2 years since the last ECCMID, there is knowledge to share and discuss. Looking to the future We are very happy that online meetings are enabling access to ESCMID educational material to members worldwide, regardless of their location and ability to tra- vel. Online options will continue to be an integral part of ESCMID’s activities, but with the imple- mentation of widespread vac- cination programmes against COVID-19, travel and meeting restrictions will be lifted and we will be able to gather in person again. We cannot wait to see you face-to-face in Lisbon, Portugal for ECCMID in April 2022. Words of thanks In a very difficult year for all members of the infection com- munity, we have only been as good as the teams that we work so closely with. My warm thanks go to the other members of the ESCMID Executive Committee, who efficiently made important decisions during such a tumul- tuous time. Without their tireless work, all of the fantastic projects undertaken in 2020 and 2021 would not have been organised in such an efficient way. New projects cannot be plan- ned without the people who put them together. The ESCMID Executive Office continued to work efficiently, even during the difficult transition to working remotely during the worst parts of the COVID-19 pandemic. From myself, the entire Executive Committee, as well as the whole ESCMID membership, we thank them for their commitment to the society and its activities. The world has learned the importance of the ESCMID motto “Managing infections, promoting science”. As we move forward into a new, post-COVID-19 phase of life, I am glad that ESCMID con- tinues to have a positive influ- ence within the community as a whole. We look forward to seeing you in the near future, online or in person.YEARBOOK 2020/2021 SOCIETY4 Annelies Zinkernagel ESCMID President-Elect and Secretaary General annelies.zinkernagel@escmid.org “Stay healthy by being responsible and wearing a mask, getting vaccinated and smiling.“In a year dominated by the CO- VID-19 pandemic, the role of in- fectious disease and microbio- logy societies such as ESCMID and the work done by all their members have clearly been brought to the world’s attention. The importance of infection con- trol both at the hospital level and in our every-day lives, as well as the implementation of standard hygiene measures and rapid dia- gnostics, was suddenly discus- sed by the general population, regardless of their proximity to the healthcare sector. More re- cently, the fastest and largest worldwide vaccine rollout ever has shown the need for clear and precise communication of scien- tific data and prompt decision- making from local and national health departments. Within the healthcare sec- tor, the importance of interpro- fessional collaborations across disciplines and departments has has become even more apparent. Infectious disease physicians and clinical microbiologists are working hand in hand with inten- sivists, and other specialists to ensure prompt and compre- hensive diagnostics and care of COVID-19 patients. ESCMID now counts pro- fessionals from 133 countries across the world among its members. We are very proud of the work they have done, colla- borating across borders in Eu- rope and beyond. Such collabo- rations have been of paramount importance and have allowed an effective transfer of knowledge on clinical practices, the refine- ment of laboratory techniques and effective decision-making. Travel and gathering restric- tions have unfortunately made the once regular in-person meetings difficult, or comple- tely impossible. ESCMID’s first ever online conference, the ESCMID Conference on Corona- virus Disease (ECCVID) was a culmination of experiences with online delivery, and we are looking forward to further on- line initiatives and the impact that they will have in allowing access to professional educa- tion regardless of participants’ location or ability to travel. Mo- ving into 2021, ESCMID conti- nues to produce open-access live web-symposia to allow leading experts to share their cutting-edge knowledge. These sessions are available to view on-demand and free of charges. These, and the rest of ESCMID’s COVID-19 activities, are further detailed in the following chap- ters of the yearbook. We have also seen a much more immediate transfer of new knowledge in scientific circles with the increasing availability of pre-print and open-access pu- blications on emerging findings. Clinical Microbiology and Infec- tion (CMI) has released several such publications. To conclude, we thank the ESCMID members for their fan- tastic, continuous and engaging work during the COVID-19 pan- demic, certainly the most active time for infectious disease in re- cent history. We look forward to continuing the fantastic collabo- rations with all our colleagues in the society, both in Europe and beyond.
