We can count now on vaccines and shared knowledge to limit the devastating effects that the pandemic had on the healthca- re systems and everyday life worldwide. The pandemic is not yet over, and we must always be vigilant. Therefore, although the pandemic limited ESCMID activities in so many ways, we were able to deliver educational programmes, to issue several scientific publications and medi- cal guidelines, thanks also to the cooperation with our affiliated societies. Producing and sharing this knowledge is paramount to guide healthcare professionals and trainees to a much more informed approach to deal with clinical challenges of emerging infections, which summarises clearly ESCMID’s mission of “pro- moting science, managing infec- tions”. Continuous delivering of educa- tion and knowledge After the cancellation of ECCMID in 2020, ESCMID quickly adapted to changes and delivered its first fully online conference ECCVID, as well as a series of live and open-access web symposia on clinical, diagnostic and public health aspects of the pandemic. These precious experiences hel- ped the Society to have the tools to organize the first ever fully on- line ECCMID in 2021, which was a great success from all perspecti- ves - scientifically, educationally and financially. Being fortified by the new available tools and due to the fact that the pande- mic was less intense in Europe in early Autumn 2021, we were able to organize a smaller Sum- mer School that took place in Car- cavelos, Portugal. Participants from more than 25 countries were present, and this was en- couraging to maintain ESCMID’s spirit and tradition of gathering people from different countries and deliver scientific education. ESCMID has been always at the forefront of the new challenges brought by the Sars-CoV-2 virus, for example with the rise of the Omicron variant during Winter 2021. We promptly organized a web symposium “ESCMID Urgent update on Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant”, which gathered experts around Europe to share new scientific, diagnostic and clinical updates on the quick expansion of the omicron variant. New ways of communicating Now that we have lived over past two years with COVID-19 as an omniscient presence, we deve- loped and experimented new ways of communicating. As we move forward into 2022, seve- ral ESCMID activities which have been always delivered face-to- face, have been planned to be in hybrid format. First and fore- most, ECCMID 2022 is our first congress organized in a hybrid format, allowing people to par- ticipate both onsite and online. This will allow to keep ESCMID traditions but, at the same time, looking towards broadening the range of communication and sharing knowledge. Another in- itiative that has been organized for delivering education in a new way, is the E-Academy, an online platform where all ESCMID mem- bers can access e-learning edu- cational and scientific contents. Thank you and looking toward the future We are thrilled that virtual con- tent is enabling access to ESC- MID educational and scientific activities to members worldwide, regardless of their location and ability to travel. Another central commitment of ESCMID is the in- volvement of LMICs members in the Society’s activities, as shown by the reduction of cost of mem- berships and congress fees. We faced difficult situations and managed to fulfil our com- mitments and mission thanks to the invaluable support of the ESCMID family. I am deeply gra- teful to the other members of the Executive Committee and the staff of the Executive Office, who acted in synergy during such challenging times. Their tireless work made possible the development and fulfilment of all the great projects carried out in 2021. The world is now aware and sensitized to our mission “Mana- ging infections, promoting sci- ence”. Finally, after witnessing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent dra- matic events of armed conflicts in Europe, it is of utmost import- ance to pursue ESCMID’s mission to foster education and scientific collaboration beyond political borders to improve the diagno- sis, treatment and prevention of infection-related diseases. It is with great pleasure that I handover the presidency to my colleague and friend Anne- lies Zinkernagel, the first female ESCMID President. I’m convinced that with her commitment and power she will do a fantastic job in guiding the society and rea- ching the goals set out in the coming two years.YEARBOOK 2021/2022 SOCIETY4 Annelies Zinkernagel ESCMID President-Elect and Secretary General annelies.zinkernagel@escmid.org “ESCMID will conti- nue its mission to improve diagnosis, treatment and pre- vention of infection- related diseases in a joint effort of Clinical Microbiologists and Infectious Diseases Specialists based on our understanding of the pathophysiology of infectious disea- ses. The COVID-19 pandemic has devas- tatingly illustrated the impact of infectious With my training in internal medi- cine and infectious diseases (Swit- zerland) and a PhD in Microbiology (USA) I aim to improve our unders- tanding of infectious diseases in order to optimize diagnostics and treatment of our patients. At this year’s ECCMID in Lisbon, Portugal, I will be assuming the role of President, taking over from my colleague and friend Maurizio San- guinetti. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is extremely difficult and devas- tating. But it also demonstrated the great importance of Clinical Microbiology (CM) and Infectious Diseases (ID) and has increased the public awareness and visibility of our fields. As the future President of ESCMID, I’m dedicated to use this momentum to further strengthen our leadership role in CM and ID. Strengthening international colla- boration and complementary work Collaboration and complementary work between CM and ID have been of utmost importance to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. We are not out of the woods yet, but thanks to the newly developed indispensable tools including vaccines, therapeu- tic agents as well as diagnostics tools, we are combating this re- cently emerged infection. ESCMID greatly values the contribution and team effort of healthcare profes- sionals around the world in facing and sharing the clinical issues of COVID-19 pandemic and how to opti- mize diagnostics as well as patient care. Sharing this knowledge is of paramount importance to allow scientists and healthcare systems worldwide to prepare for emerging infectious diseases. Scientists did an outstanding and extremely swift work in identifying and sequencing SARS-CoV-2 virus, giving the scien- tific and technological means to de- velop countermeasures and leading the way to the development of the first vaccines. The speed in develo- ping efficient diagnostic tools and vaccines was extraordinary and it wouldn’t be possible without the collaborative efforts of experts in CM and ID from different countries diseases on socie- ties in the last years and again has proven that the impossible is feasible as a team. We thank you for your commitment, ESCMID needs each one of you to ensure excellence and leadership in Cli- nical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases” YEARBOOK 2021/2022 SOCIETY 5 worldwide. This has shown that through collaboration with other scientific societies and different specialities, we can battle old, new and neglected infections. Raising awareness on CM and ID During the past two years, ESC- MID grew as a community, gaining more experience in the prevention of emerging infections and sharing knowledge in the form of medical guidelines, scientific publications and educational activities. Standard hospital epidemiology measures such as masks and hand disinfec- tion have become common and widely accepted measures and will help to deal with future challenges. The current COVID-19 pandemic rai- sed awareness of the importance and impact of infectious diseases in politics and the public. People have become more aware of the work needed to deal with an unex- pected pandemic and, at the same time, of what it took to battle past infections like poliomyelitis and measles. The international renown of CM and ID is a great opportunity for ESCMID to further develop its leadership in these areas based on strong individuals and outstanding collaborations. Fostering education and training As people changed their habits due to the pandemic, ESCMID had to change too and proved to be exceptionally resilient in adapting to travel and face-to-face meeting restrictions. The first ever fully on- line ECCMID took place in 2021 and was a great success. The online format allowed us to broaden our scope and have a record number of represented countries, hosting par- ticipants that would have been hard to reach with an onsite meeting. The scientific and educational pro- grammes included successful and diverse formats, such as keynote lectures, fireplace sessions, invited symposia, educational workshops and meet-the-expert sessions. A lot of attention has been posed on trai- nees in CM and ID, to help the new generation of experts to face future challenges. We also resumed with great pleasure our educational ac- tivities, in online formats such as online postgraduate courses and web symposia. We were also able to organize a smaller in person Summer School, that took place in Carcavelos, Portugal. Educational activities are more important than ever therefore ESCMID is now resol- ved to further develop new tools for sharing knowledge and promoting science, believing that digitalisation is now integral for delivering educa- tional content and interactions. We are further investing in IT tools and planning ECCMID in a hybrid format for 2022 and beyond, as well as im- proving existing services like the E- Library and introducing our brand- new e-learning platform the ESCMID E-Academy. Words of thanks First, a heartfelt thank you to all my mentors for their tireless support and role modelling. I would not be where I am without you! Then I would like to conclude by thanking all the colleagues who de- dicate time, compassion and talent to help ESCMID achieve its mission. Among them, all Executive Commit- tee and ad-hoc members, chairs and members of our standing com- mittees (EUCAST and EUCIC) and subcommittees (Education, Scien- tific Affairs, Publication, Professio- nal Affairs, International Affairs), Parity Commission, Ethics Advisory Committee, Trainee Association of ESCMID (TAE), Emerging Infections Task Force (EITaF), Study Groups, ECCMID Programme Committee, and the Clinical Microbiology and Infection (CMI) Editorial Board. Fi- nally, I thank Maurizio Sanguinetti and Jesús Rodríguez-Baño for the passion and commitment they put into to the Society during their terms; it’s an honour to take over from them, and I will proudly build on their invaluable work towards our common goals.YEARBOOK 2021/2022 SOCIETY6 Anu Kantele Professor of Infectious Diseases, University of Helsinki Chief Senior Medical Officer, Helsinki University Hospital Head, Meilahti Infectious Disea- ses and Vaccine Research Center, HUH Helsinki, Finland José Ramón Paño-Pardo Infectious Disease Consultant Hospital Clínico Universitario Zaragoza, Spain YEARBOOK 2021/2022 SOCIETY 7 New EC members At the end of 2021, elections were held among the ESCMID members to fill three positions on the ESCMID Executive Com- mittee, two representing Infecti- ous Diseases and one represen- ting Clinical Microbiology. The new members duly elected were Anu Kantele, Infectious Diseases specialist at University of Helsin- ki and Helsinki University Hos- pital (Finland), and José Ramón Paño-Pardo, Infectious Diseases specialist at Hospital Clínico Uni- versitario (Spain). Anu and José will join the ESCMID Executive Committee in April 2022. Professional Affairs Officer Emmanuelle Cambau, Clinical Microbiology specialist at Bichat Hospital (France), was successfully re-elected for a se- cond term. We congratulate the new and re-elected officers and look for- ward to their contributions to the Society. José Ramón Paño-Pardo José Ramón has been a member of the Sociedad Española de En- fermedades Infecciosas y Micro- biología Clínica (SEIMC) and the ESCMID Study Group for Antimi- crobial Stewardship (ESGAP). He is an infectious disease (ID) physician who is motivated in medical education and clinical research, especially in the realm of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship. He is also very interested in profes- sional and scientific communi- cation and networking. José Ramón firmly believes that one of the main strengths of ESCMID, aside from its mem- bership size and cosmopolitan composition, is the fact that it coheres clinical microbiologists and infectious diseases physici- ans’ perspectives within a single organization with a balanced re- presentation. This multidiscipli- nary approach, boosted by the contribution of other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with ID, public health experts and basic resear- chers makes him eager to share his experience. Last but not least, José Ra- món sees the incorporation to the ESCMID EC as an opportuni- ty to work with top-of-the-class European infectious diseases physicians and clinical microbio- logists, which is extraordinarily motivating. Anu Kantele Anu has a long-standing passion for infectious diseases (ID) me- dicine and research. Besides ha- ving worked as clinician, resear- cher, and educator in Finland, she has conducted studies in various low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and the US. As she is particularly fascinated by the global nature of the disci- pline, her research efforts are focused on various health con- cerns of global relevance and approaches to tackle them. Her fields of interest cover vaccinati- ons, diarrhoea, tropical diseases, travel-associated diseases, anti- microbial resistance and other microbial menaces transported across borders by international travel, migration, and trade. Anu is eager to put her efforts towards further developing ESC- MID as a tool to foster evidence- based education, enhance gui- delines to support clinical work, promote open-access high-qua- lity science, and contribute to joint activities focusing on global concerns related to AMR, migra- tion, global warming and various concerns in LMICs. She sees ESCMID as a platform to make our voices heard in Europe – and to shoulder our societal respon- sibility e.g. by providing exper- tise to LMICs with particularly challenging ID problems. Anu strongly feels that evi- dence-based medicine is a cen- tral path to making a long-term impact, and that changing the world is something we need to work for together in all fields of life, research serving as one among the most powerful. Ena- bling societal and international interaction, ESCMID provides a unique platform for making an impact.Next >
