His research line focuss- es on the pathogenesis of viral infections and especially those viruses that emerge through zoonotic transmission, as a ba- sis for (future) interventions and medical countermeasures. This brings together work performed earlier at the Veterinary faculty in Utrecht and more recent work on human viruses in Rotterdam. He brings a strong track record of fundamental and applied research of MERS- CoV, SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. In collaboration with international teams,thenovelcoronaviruswasclassifiedasSARS-CoV-2,diag- nostic assays were developed and validated while animal and in vi- tro organoid models were set up to further understand pathogene- sis and test (antibody based) intervention strategies. Development of reagents, vaccines and protocols for molecular and serological detection of these emerging viral pathogens lead to options for in- terventions and medical countermeasures. Dr. Haagmans has more than 230 publications on different subjects in (clinical) virology, identificationandcharacterizationofnovelemergingvirusesand the development of vaccines. He is an expert consultant of WHO, FAO and OIE on coronaviruses as well as a member of the the Coro- naviridae Study Group of the ICTV. He is PI on several Dutch and EU grants and is co-coordinating the IMI ZAPI project, focused on zoo- notic anticipation and preparedness initiatives, and amongst oth- ers led to discovery of broadly cross-reactive monoclonal antibod- ies against beta coronaviruses. Dr. Haagmans will receive the 2022 award at ECCMID 2022 during the Excellence Award Session on Sunday, 24 April 2022, 08:30 in Hall A. During the ceremony, he will give a presentation entitled: “Characterising SARS-CoV-2, the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic: an ongoing effort”. Bart Haagmans Rotterdam, Netherlands Prof. Herman Goossens is a full professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of Antwerp in Belgium since 1992, direc- tor of the laboratory of Clinical Microbiol- ogy at the University Hospital Antwerp since 1992 and director of Laboratory Medicine of the University Hospital Ant- werp since 1997. His professional goal is to bridge the gap between basic and clini- cal research, with a major focus on antibi- otic resistance, to enhance the standard of healthcare, public health and professional standards, for the good of the public in large. Prof. Goossens’s current research is fo- cusedinfiveareas.First, thedetectionandgeneticmechanisms involved in the emergence and evolution of antibiotic resistance and virulence in bacteria and its epidemiological and ecological bases and implications. Second, studying antimicrobial use in hospitals, the community and long-term care facilities, develop- ingindicatorsofuseandqualityofprescribing, initiallyinEurope, later globally, focusing on Low and Middle Income Countries. Third, linkingscientificandclinicalresearchthroughoutEuropeinlow- er respiratory tract infections, in primary health care and hospi- tal medical practice. Fourth, better prepare Europe for emerging infectious diseases and pandemics. Fifth, building a network of more than 800 diagnostic labs in more than 40 countries in Europe to support clinical trials that investigate the utility of new antimi- crobial strategies and diagnostics. Prof. Goossens authored more than 600 Web of Science cited papers, and his papers have been cited close to 25,000 times. In 2008 Prof. Goossens obtained the prestigious status of Methusalem top-scientist from the Flemish government. Prof. Goossens will receive the 2020 award at ECCMID 2022 during the Excellence Award Session on Sunday, 24 April 2022, 08:30 in Hall A. During the ceremony, he will give a presentation entitled: “Transcending european clinical research in infectious diseases through collaboration to break down traditional silos”. Herman Goossens, Antwerpen, Belgium Awards and Grants 2022 & 2020 17FINAL PROGRAMME – 32nd ECCMID Lisbon, Portugal 2022 ESCMID Young Investigator Awards for Research in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases 2022 Michele Bartoletti is an Infectious Dis- ease Physician of IRCCS Sant’Orsola and Assistant Professor of Infectious Disease of University of Bologna. He has been graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 2008, has completed his infectious disease training in 2014 and received Ph.D. in 2018. As Infectious Disease Phy- sician he is involved in care of critically ill and immunocompromised patients including patients with he- matological disease and transplant recipients. His main research interests have been infections in the immunocompromised host, critically ill patients, and patients with liver cirrhosis. During the COVID-19 pandemic he has been involved in a series of studies related to epidemiological aspects of COVID-19 including bacteri- al and fungal superinfections complicating severe COVID-19. He was the chair of ESCMID COVID-19 treatment guidelines. In 2021 he received recognition as top reviewer for Clinical Microbiology and Infection. Dr. Bartoletti will receive his award at ECCMID 2022 during the Special Session “Young Investigator Awards for Research in CM and ID” (Saturday, 23 April 2022, 11:00 in Hall B) and he will give a presentation entitled: “Epidemiology and clinical management of infections in patients with liver cirrhosis”. Michele Bartoletti, Bologna, Italy Tim is an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Infectious Diseases and Medical Mi- crobiology and Honorary Clinical Lec- turer at Imperial College London. He completed his PhD in 2018 exploring personalised antimicrobial manage- ment in secondary care. In 2017 he was awarded the British Infection As- sociation (BIA) Barnett Christie Award for Excellence in Original Research. Tim currently works within the Centre for Antimicrobial Optimisation (CAMO) at Imperial Col- lege London and is the Research Theme Lead for Precision Pre- scribing in the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Health- care Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance (HPRU in HCAI and AMR). Tim’s research interests focus on antimicrobial stewardship and in precision prescribing of antimicrobials. This includes the de- velopmentandimplementationofartificialintelligence-based clinical decision support systems, biosensor-based methods for intermittent and continuous drug monitoring, and therapeutical- lybeneficialdrug-druginteractions.Duringthepandemichehas been involved in investigating the impact of COVID-19 on bacte- rial infections and antimicrobial use and supported the develop- ment of appropriate frameworks for monitoring and surveillance.
