The first European Con- gress of Clinical Microbiology (ECCM) was organized in 1983 in Bologna. After the Society’s adoption of infectious diseases in the late eighties, the first ECCMID was held in 1991 in Oslo. Initially a biannual congress, in 1999 ECCMID became an annual event. ECCMID venues are stra- tegically selected and rotated to ensure easy access for colleagues from different areas of Europe and other continents. Since its initiation, ECCMID has grown in size and importance and now attracts around 14,000 participants every year. The number of submitted abstracts has risen to over 5,000 of which roughly 70% are accepted for oral, ePoster or poster presentation. ECCMID is a congress the industry continues to support by offering sponsored symposia as well as a large and comprehensive exhibition of labo- ratory equipment, diagnostic tools and pharmaceutical products. Leading scientists address the diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, prevention and infection control of in- fectious diseases, as well as the related basic microbiology. Keynote lectures, symposia, meet-the-expert sessions, educational workshops, open forums, late-breakers, year-in sessions, as well as poster, ePoster and abstract oral sessions provide insights into recent scientific developments. Many subjects are addressed in interactive sessions to maximize the educational aspect. Dele- gates can take advantage of continuing medical education credits for attending ECCMID. ESCMID Network ECCMID has also become a favoured occasion for project groups to meet and interact. ESCMID study groups, networks and project teams in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases, realize that ECCMID provides a unique opportunity to present their work to a large scientific community, exchange views with colleagues and attract new members. Raising Public Awareness Success and failure in managing infectious diseases have a significant impact on public health. That is why the ESCMID Executive Committee is keeping opinion leaders and the public informed about key findings related to the prac- tice of infectious disease medicine as well as public health. www.escmid.org/eccmidAbout ESCMID14 Awards and Grants ESCMID supports young clinicians and researchers as well as established scholars with awards and grants to acknowledge past achievements and provide an incentive for future accomplishments. ESCMID supports its members’ research projects and training with about seven hundred thousand euros every year. CAREer Grant for ESCMID members working in the fields of clinical microbiology, infectious diseases and infection control who need support to advance their scientific career whilst looking after their children. Award for Excellence in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in recognition of an outstanding lifetime contribution to science, education or professional affairs in either field. Young Investigator Award for Research in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases supports emerging researchers in the fields of in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. ESCMID Young Investigator Award 2019 The TAE Outstanding Trainee Award recognises and rewards multi-skilled trainees with extracurricular activities in teaching, networking and collaboration. Research Grants for outstanding research projects proposed by young ESCMID members. Study Group Research Grants available for collaborative Study Group research projects. ECCMID Travel Grant awarded to ESCMID Young Scientist members with excellent abstracts for ECCMID. ECCMID Programme Book Grants use funds from sale of the ECCMID printed programme book to directly support attendees who would otherwise not be able to attend the congress. The ISF/ESCMID Sepsis Award recognizes an outstanding sepsis abstract submitted to ECCMID. Attendance Grants for Educational and Scientific Meetings support young colleagues attending an event organized or endorsed by ESCMID. ISID/ESCMID joint fellowships sponsor two fellowships per year to perform multidisciplinary clinical and laboratory training abroad. The scope of the journal comprises basic and clinical microbiology and parasitology; diagnosis, management and treatment of bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections; epidemiology, prophylaxis and vaccination; molecular pathogenesis of infectious diseases; nosocomial infections, infections in the immunosuppressed host and host defence mechanisms. The impact factor was 7.117 in 2019. www.escmid.org/CMI The European Manual of Clinical Microbiology The European Manual of Clinical Micro- biology is a hard-copy publication jointly produced by ESCMID and the Société Française de Microbiologie (SFM). It contains essential information and serves as reference in clinical micro- biology. The 2012 edition is based on a popular French manual of clinical micro- biology, which was published by SFM in 2010. It has been updated and adapted for Europe, and several chapters have been added. The manual is available from ESCMID for the reduced price of €25 with free shipping worldwide. www.escmid.org/manualmicrobiologyAbout ESCMID16 ESCMID Yearbook The Yearbook is published and presented each spring at ECCMID. This publication gives a comprehensive and lively overview of the society’s activities over the previous year. www.escmid.org/ yearbook Publications ESCMID Website The website is the information hub covering all ESCMID activities and projects. It targets ESCMID members, professionals in the field of infection, opinion leaders (e.g. politicians, journalists) as well as the general public. ESCMID members have access to special features of the website. Popular services such as the Membership Directory, the eLibrary and CMI can be quickly accessed online after logging in. www.escmid.org17 ESCMID Weekly Newsletter The electronic weekly newsletter, which includes timely information of interest to CM and ID professionals, is distributed to the ESCMID membership and other subscribers. www.escmid.org/news www.escmid.org/onlinenews ESCMID: The first 35 years ESCMID celebrated its 35th anniversary during the 28th ECCMID in Madrid. To commemorate this event Murat Akova and Mario Poljak, two former ESCMID presidents, published a review of the society’s history through the eyes of its former presidents, including anecdotes and overviews of the society’s activities. www.escmid.org/historyAbout ESCMID18 Professional Affairs Professional Affairs includes: ÆÆ Activities with other organizations in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases ÆÆ Collaboration with relevant sections of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) ÆÆ Professional policy issues in the fields of CM and ID ÆÆ Matters relating to professional training, mobility and recruitment ÆÆ Equal opportunities ÆÆ Trainees’ issues Some of the current projects within the Professional Affairs portfolio are listed on the opposite page.19 ESCMID Parity Commission The ESCMID Parity Commission was founded to review and improve the representation of minorities as well as gender and geographic balance in the society’s fields of expertise. Trainee Association of ESCMID (TAE) The goal of this initiative is to increase and support the scientific and medical contribution of young clinical microbio- logists and infectious disease special- ists all over the world. ESCMID Collaborative Centres (ECC) The ESCMID Collaborative Centres are infectious disease and/or clinical microbiology centres of excellence across all continents and include pres- tigious international organizations such as ECDC and WHO. ESCMID encourages members to go abroad to learn about organizational routines as well as diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Such visits also help researchers to establish new contacts and foster inter- national exchange. www.escmid.org/parity www.escmid.org/tae www.escmid.org/ecc ESCMID Observerships The ESCMID Observership programme provides funding for ESCMID members intending to visit an ESCMID Collaborative Centre in another country for five days to one month to learn good clinical and/ or laboratory practice. The programme is reserved exclusively for ESCMID full and young scientist members. ESCMID Mentorships This initiative gives ESCMID members (mentees) the opportunity to benefit for up to two years from mentoring by a senior member based at an ESCMID Mentorship Centre. Job Platform This platform fosters the professional advancement of trainees, specialists and researchers in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases by posting advertisements from employers as well as job seekers. www.escmid/observership www.escmid.org/mentorship www.escmid.org/jobsNext >
