The Society also participates in scientific projects and networks, takes a leadership role in the consultation process with European health authorities, and cooperates with industry representatives in the areas of research and development, science communication, awards, grants and fellowships. UEMS ESCMID cooperates with the sections of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases of the European Union of Medi- cal Specialists (UEMS) focusing on train- ing programmes, specialty recognition and professional affairs with the goal of facilitating harmonization within Europe. Affiliation and ESCMID Council Affiliation with regional, national and international societies in our fields helps promote the wider interests of the re- spective memberships and strengthens cooperation in science, education and professional affairs. Representatives of the societies affiliated with ESCMID constitute the ESCMID Council. Members of affiliated societies receive ESCMID’s Weekly News and societies participate in ESCMID programmes. www.escmid.org/council Especially important are cooperative initiatives with societies, both in Europe and abroad, that share a similar mission with ESCMID, such as the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID) and the American Society of Microbiology (ASM).21 ESCMID‘s standing committees: EUCAST and EUCIC ESCMID promotes and supports the involvement of its members and study groups in European and international research and policy initiatives. This includes the participation of ESCMID in EU-funded research programmes and the co-organization of conferences and workshops in the field of public health. ESCMID informs its members of European funding opportunities and represents the interests of the community of clinical microbiologists EUCAST – European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing It is a professional standing commit- tee consisting of national breakpoint committees and microbiology experts from all European and other countries. Their task is to set breakpoints for new antibacterial and antifungal agents on behalf of the European Medicines Agency, and to revise breakpoints for existing agents. EUCAST together with ESCMID hosts the international website for minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)-distributions of bacteria and fungi and determines epidemiological cut-off values together with a panel of interna- tional experts in human and veterinary medicine and food safety. EUCAST is convened and financed by ESCMID, ECDC and the national breakpoint committees. www.eucast.org EUCIC – European Committee for Infection Control This committee was formed in 2014 and its major goals are to harmonize infec- tion control and preventive measures in all European countries in order to reduce morbidity and mortality related to hospital-acquired infections. Develop- ment of new educational tools as well as specific guidelines and clinical trials close to daily practice are a key focus. EITaF provides up to date information on outbreaks with epidemic or pandemic potential, and establishes panel of experts to evaluate emerg- ing infections threat and pathogens’ diagnostic challenges. Moreover, EITaF promotes research and education on emerging infections in collaboration with ESCMID Study Groups and Executive Committee.
